On
January 27, the Central Florida Animal Reserve (CFAR) was proud to host the first Member Appreciation day of the
year. This open house afforded members and their families the opportunity to
come see how the cats live. The tone of the day was set early on as the morning
clouds parted, unveiling some much missed sun. Clad in shirts equally as bright,
the volunteers readied themselves to greet the incoming members as they began to
arrive around noon.

Over the next 5 hours, the
facility crackled with the energy, excitement, and wonderment of visitors old
and new. White barricades kept the crowds safely away from enclosures as
experienced staff guided tours through the facility. The cats watched
their every move. Some residents were mildly curious at the visitors, while
others paid it no heed, instead preferring to nap in the warmth of the new sun.
Whether at play or asleep, the cats made quite an impression.
"The cats are just amazing." Sondra Talbert, from Orlando, visited the facility
for the first time along with her husband David and daughter Janice. "What
struck me the most was the obvious love that all the volunteers have for the
animals," she said. "I found myself watching them almost as much as the cats."
In addition to being a registered nurse, she is now also a registered member.

Comments from the Event |
| "It's
wonderful to see the strong relationships the cats have with their
caretakers." "This place
is beautiful and peaceful. I'm glad the cats are well kept."
"I'm impressed at how nice and clean
the area is."
"Even behind the barriers, you can see
how impressive they are." |
Ron Smykay has been following the organization for
several years, and has the distinction of being a lifetime member. "I've
been coming out for about 3 years now, and it's always fascinating to see such
large cats in a comfortable environment." Ron has seen a great deal of the
organization in years and had much to say regarding the event. "Having been here
before, I think the touring conditions were handled very well. The facility was
well organized and really considerate of those on both sides of the fence. Out
at various events away from the compound there is always a certain necessary slant toward
the crowds, but when you're at their home, you really get to see what the cats
are like and how they are well cared for."
When the day was done, close to $2,000 was pledged
for the cats care and the organization gained even more members. What really
made the day was the connection between the cats and their visitors. Just
coming eye to eye with these magnificent predators taught them more than they
ever expected.
